Curriculum

The comprehensive curriculum offered at Saint John Vianney High School helps students grow and excel in every area of their lives. This, in addition to our beautiful campus, robust extra-curricular offerings, and more, is the reason that families from near and far trust our Catholic school to help their children attain acceptance to college and prepare for a successful future.

Academic Departments

Saint John Vianney High School is nationally recognized for offering our students a complete and diverse education, as evidenced by our college acceptance rate of 99%. Our various academic departments work together toward this goal, and include:

Theology

As a Catholic school, we offer our students a strong foundation in theology and Church doctrine. Classes begin with an introductory course designed to be approachable to students from different faiths, later moving into Church history and developments.

Business & Technology

This section of our curriculum prepares students for taking on the modern world. It includes courses in Marketing, Finance and Accounting, as well as Computer Science, Robotics, and Engineering. Honors and Dual Enrollment courses are available.

English

Our teachers work to refine students’ communication and critical thinking skills. Standard courses are supplemented with electives such as  Journalism, and students may also contribute to the yearbook or earn credit with Advanced Placement  and Dual Enrollment courses.

Fine & Performing Arts

Creativity and self-expression are valuable to an individual’s overall growth, which is why we encourage students to participate in the arts. We teach chorus, musical instruments, drawing, photography, and digital design, as well as AP and Dual Enrollment electives.

Mathematics

SJV ensures all students have a foundational grasp of mathematics. True math-lovers, however, can deepen their understanding with modeling, calculus, statistics, as well as AP and Dual Enrollment courses.

Physical Education & Health

Students exercise through various recreational sports and in the weight room while learning about wellness topics,  driving,  the dangers of drugs and alcohol,  first aid,  and  CPR.

Science

Saint  John  Vianney  High  School   offers  a    well-rounded science  education  with classes in  biology, chemistry,    physics,   and    forensics Courses take place in a lab setting. Honors and AP courses are offered.

Social Studies

These courses provide an understanding of history, sociology,    and    psychology  and  are    valuable    for navigating   the  world successfully.  That’s  why our curriculum  addresses   all  of    those    subjects,  in addition   to   American   law   and   civilization  and  multiple   AP and Dual Enrollment offerings.

World Language

In today's interconnected world, learning another language opens doors to new cultures, careers, and global opportunities. Students can choose between four-year programs in Italian and Spanish.

Academic Integrity

Inherent in the stated goals of Saint John Vianney High School is the commitment to mold moral individuals who adhere to the highest ethical standards. In conformance with these goals, Saint John Vianney High School insists that all students produce their own work. Saint John Vianney High School will not tolerate violations of academic integrity, which include cheating, plagiarism, and the theft of academic materials. A student who cheats is dishonest, deceitful, and fraudulent. Plagiarism, a form of cheating, is dishonest because it is the stealing of others’ ideas or words and passing them off as one’s own. Saint John Vianney High School, as well as every other academic and professional institution, strictly prohibits academic cheating and plagiarizing. Saint John Vianney High School students must adhere to an Academic Honesty and Integrity Code.

Graduation Requirements

All  students  must  carry a  full schedule and to  graduate  from Saint John Vianney High School, students must acquire a minimum of 150 credits. Students are required to complete an approved course of study which includes the following:

  • Theology - 4

  • English - 4

  • Mathematics - 3

  • Fine, Practical & Performing Arts - 1

  • Physical Ed/Health - 2 *

  • Lab. Science - 3

  • US History - 2

  • World History - 1

  • World Language - 2

  • To Advance to 10th Grade - 35 credits

  • To Advance to 11th Grade - 70 credits

  • To Advance to 12th Grade - 110 credits

  • To Graduate - 150 credits

Please note:

  • Students taking 2 or more AP courses in one year are exempt from the PE/Health requirement for that same year.

  • To earn a diploma from SJV, a student must be enrolled full-time in his/her senior year and be taking a full schedule of approved SJV courses.

  • All seniors must pass both marking periods in Term 2 to complete the requirements for a diploma.

  • Seniors are required to complete 30 hours of Christian service to graduate.


Students wishing to pursue a rigorous curriculum for competitive colleges should take four years in all core subject areas (Math, Science, English, History, and World Language) with a combination of Honors, Dual Enrollment, and Advanced Placement courses.

Saint John Vianney High School

Saint John Vianney High School is a ministry of the Diocese of Trenton. As such, this school follows all doctrines and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and operates under the authority of the Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, together with the administration of the Department of Catholic Schools.
