Saint John Vianney High School offers a variety of scholarship and award opportunities for students. The information listed below is for the 2026-2027 school year.

Financial Scholarships
All financial scholarships are financial need-based and awarded at the discretion of the Administration and Scholarship Committee. All families must apply for Tuition Assistance and submit a letter of interest for consideration. Scholarships with links will require applications. Scholarships without links do not require applications but applicants who wish to be considered must email gilmartin@sjvhs.com and state their desire to be considered. Each year SJV gives out four $1,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:
The student must be a practicing Catholic.
The student must be involved in extra-curricular activities.
The student must demonstrate leadership skills.
The student must complete application and essay.
Interested students must complete the application for the Lancer Scholarship by November 15, 2025 for consideration. No Late submissions will be accepted.
A committee will review all applications and if you are granted the scholarship it will be included in your acceptance packet scheduled to go out early January. Each scholarship has a value of $1,000 and is renewed annually if student maintains a "B" average and has no disciplinary problems.

Merit Scholarships are based solely on the academic merit of the student.
The President's Merit Scholarship in the amount of $9000.
The Principal's Merit Scholarship in the amount of $8000.
The Sister Bernadette Larson, MSC Merit Scholarship in the amount of $6500.
These scholarships are given out to incoming freshmen and are renewed annually. This amount will not decrease or increase over the 4 years at SJV. No application is required. Recipients will be chosen based on 6th, 7th and 8th academic performance and High School Placement Test score.
On Wednesday, April 2, 2014, Reverend Monsignor Edward D. Strano, 84, a beloved priest of the Diocese of Trenton, entered eternal life. Monsignor Strano was a graduate of St. Charles College, Catonsville, MD, Seton Hall University, South Orange, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend George W. Ahr on May 26, 1956 and served as associate pastor in the following parishes: Sacred Heart in Mount Holly, twice at St. John Vianney in Colonia, St. Anthony in Trenton, St. Joseph in Keyport, St Gregory the Great in Hamilton Square, and St. Mary in Bordentown. In 1976, Monsignor was installed as pastor of St. Ann in Keansburg and in 1986, installed as pastor of St. Clement in Matawan.
In addition to his parish assignments, Monsignor also faithfully served the Diocese of Trenton in the following ministries: Burlington County CYO Director, Assistant CCD Director, Chaplain, Rider College, CYO Moderator, Burlington County, the Priests Personnel Office, the Commission to Study All Aspects of the Monitor, Prosynodal Judge and Defender of the Bond, the Expansion and Development Committee, and Vicar for Catholic Education. In 1993, His Holiness John Paul II named him a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor. His passion was working with youth. He was known for organizing CYO dances that drew large numbers of students from all over the state. He was revered as a powerful speaker, who delivered profound homilies. He retired from full time ministry in 1997.
The Reverend Monsignor Strano Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded to one 8th grade student from each of the following parishes: Saint Benedict Church, Holmdel, Saint Clement Church, Matawan and Saint Ann Church, Keansburg. The candidates along with their parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) must be registered members of one of these parishes. They must be in good standing, practicing in their faith and living a Catholic lifestyle regardless of race, gender or national origin.
Each student selected to receive this scholarship will receive a 4 year scholarship of $8,000 annually. This amount will not decrease or increase over the 4 years at SJV.
The students receiving this scholarship must remain in good academic standing and have no disciplinary infractions.
The following items must be submitted for consideration of this scholarship:
Application and essay
High School Placement Test Score (The HSPT must be taken at SJV)
1 Letter of recommendation (priest, teacher, coach, guidance counselor, etc.)

The Friends & Family of SJV Scholarship was established by friends and alumni at SJV and is awarded to a student in financial need.
Audrey's family, teammates and friends established the Audrey Gomez Scholarship in January 2002 after her passing. Audrey was an exceptional athlete, student and friend. Her legacy as a Lady Lancer still lives on. The scholarship is awarded to a student in financial need.
Sponsored by Lauren’s Light, a charity organization founded in memory of Lauren Hewski, Class of 2023.
This year's scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman (Class of 2030). The scholarship recipient will receive $2,500 annually for four years. The scholarship is open to female students, that have at least a B average, participate in extracurricular activities, and remain at Saint John Vianney High School through 12th grade. Priority will be given to families in need. The application process includes general information as well as three short answer prompts. Interested students must complete the application process for consideration by 11:59pm on Friday, November 15, 2025. CLICK HERE to apply.
The scholarship recipient will be notified via email sometime in December 2025. To retain the scholarship, the student must remain in good academic standing with a B average and have no disciplinary violations during their Saint John Vianney High School career. The family of Margaret T. Lenihan, whose 17 grandchildren attended Saint John Vianney High School, established a memorial scholarship in her name for a student in financial need.
The family of John Resta, Class of 1979 and his wife Sylvia established this scholarship in memory of the couple who were victims of the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center. John, along with his siblings, Christine (1975), Dawn (1981) and Michael (1978) all attended Saint John Vianney High School. The scholarship is awarded to a practicing Catholic from the Bayshore Area.
The family of Jayne Shalkowski, who coached cheerleading at Saint John Vianney High School for 40 years and was a beloved guidance counselor, has established a memorial scholarship in her name for a student in financial need. The Kenneth Szyarto Memorial Scholarship has been formed by the Szyarto family and SJV alumni in memory of the former athletic director, and longtime friend. The Kenneth Szyarto Memorial Scholarship will be given to one incoming freshman each year. For the 2026-2027 school year, the scholarship recipient will receive $2,000 annually for four years.
In order to be considered for the Kenneth Szyarto Memorial Scholarship, the following criteria must be met:
Applicants must be a resident of Monmouth County, have at least a B average
Must be in financial need (family must apply for tuition assistance)
The candidate must be involved in extracurricular activities
Have the desire for a Catholic high school education
Report cards will also be reviewed along with High School Placement Test score
The student must remain in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 3.0 and have no disciplinary problems during their SJV career

This scholarship is awarded through the generosity of the Allingham Family who has established it in the memory of Christopher Allingham '83 who unfortunately was a victim of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Applicants should articulate how their faith in God motivates and influences their everyday lives.
Preference will be given to applicants who have shown leadership skills and taken initiative inorganizing or participating in activities that promote the well-being of animals.
Consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.
The recipient of the Dr. James Foster Catholic Faith and Education Award will receive financial assistance to further their education and spiritual growth. Additionally, they will be recognized as a torchbearer of Dr. James Foster's legacy, inspiring others to embrace their Catholic faith with joy, curiosity, and a desire for continuous learning.
The Mary Lou Merritt Award is a highly esteemed award offered at Saint John Vianney High School as a heartfelt tribute to the remarkable contributions of Mary Lou Merritt. This award aims to honor Mary Lou Merritt's unwavering dedication to the Christian service program, which she carried out with love, enthusiasm, and a spirit of genuine care.
The Loyalty Award is specifically dedicated to families who are enrolling their third or more children at SJV, symbolizing the deep and enduring relationship they have forged with the school, as well as their unwavering commitment and loyalty to the school community.
The Legacy Award celebrates and appreciates families who have chosen Saint John Vianney as their educational home for multiple generations. It acknowledges the trust and confidence these families have placed in the school to provide a high-quality education, a nurturing environment, and a Catholic value-based education for their children.
As the founding Principal, Father Capano's guiding mission was to create an environment where students could experience both intellectual and spiritual growth. The Joseph Deroba Leadership Award is offered at SJV in honor of its former president and principal. Through the Julie Michaels Student Activities Award, Saint John Vianney High School seeks to honor the invaluable contributions of Julie Michaels and to ensure that her vision of a lively, connected, engaged student body, that helped create lifelong friendships remains an integral part of the school's culture for generations to come.
The Saint John Vianney Award is a prestigious financial honor offered at Saint John Vianney High School, paying homage to the school's patron saint and his exemplary life of faith, dedication, determination, and selflessness.
