EFFECTIVE & CREATIVE WRITING
(7/9 - 7/26 ; 9:30am - 12pm ; grades 9 & 10)
This course focuses on multiple paragraph development, use of transitions, various expository writing styles, and formal/informal writing (letters, resumes, etc.). Students will also explore various creative writing styles. Additionally, this course offers students an avenue to writing enhancement outside of formal literature study.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL WRITING
(7/9 - 7/26 ; 9:30am - 12pm ; grades 11 & 12)
This course addresses techniques for enhancing student production of essays (expository, persuasive, descriptive, and analytical) and personal writing (prose and poetry) through a workshop format. The concepts of proofreading, revision, peer editing, and self-assessment will be introduced and applied to all assignments; skill in critical reading, discussion, and revision will be emphasized. Students will learn the power of language as they complete a portfolio of their best work as part of their final assessment.
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
(7/31 - 8/16 ; 9am - 12pm ; grade 9)
This course emphasizes the new skills required to use the Tablet PC with SJV's network. Keyboarding techniques, word processing (including MLA format for term paper production), presentation, and spreadsheet software are used. Use of computer peripherals, saving and backing up files as well as data organization skills will be covered.
FRESHMEN READINESS REVIEW - ENGLISH
(8/6 - 8/16 ; 9am - 10am ; grade 9)
This course will prepare incoming freshmen to be on pace with the freshmen level english curriculum. *Strongly suggested for incoming freshmen who did not perform well on the HSPT or who need extra help in English and/or writing before September.
FRESHMEN READINESS REVIEW - MATH
(8/6 - 8/16 ; 10am - 11am ; grade 9)
This course will prepare incoming freshmen to be on pace with the freshmen level math curriculum. *Strongly suggested for incoming freshmen who did not perform well on the HSPT or who need extra help before entering into Algebra 1 in September.
